IN-PERSON PROGRAMMING I APRIL 12, 2024 I 5:30 – 7:30 PM (EST) I OTTAWA CHAPTER I MEMBERS-ONLY
Global geopolitics is at a pivotal moment. The on-going Russian invasion of Ukraine, escalating tensions in the Middle East due to the Israel-Gaza war, the fluctuating dynamics in U.S.-China relations, and the upcoming US presidential election are likely to contribute to an increasing shift in the geopolitical landscape. These disruptive events pose a challenge to countries like Canada in navigating their relationship with China while maintaining their values and interests. Internationally, China’s role has been increasingly scrutinized as these events continue to disrupt global stability and the rules-based international order. Domestically, Canada must challenge and confront China on issues of foreign interference, domestic human rights abuses, and coercive economic tactics. transnational repression and aggression against its neighbours, but cooperate on issues of trade and climate change. This timely and important discussion will explore the complex geopolitical landscape between China and the West, and its implications for Canada-China relations.
Discussants:
- Jeff Mahon, Executive in Resident, Canada West Foundation; Director, International Business and Geopolitical Advisory at StrategyCorp Inc.
- Xiaobei Chen, Professor of Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Carleton University
