There is currently a race to lend money and build infrastructure in some of the fastest growing economies of the world. With China pursuing its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), other countries, including Canada, are also looking to influence the development of various regions around the globe. However, with COVID-19 and associated economic slow down, worldwide economic conditions  are changing How is China shifting its approach to international development?

Two expert panelists are set to join the Forum to discuss this fascinating topic with attendees:

Juliet Lu, Assistant Professor at UBC, will talk about the recent development of China’s BRI, as she specializes in China’s growing investments in resources abroad, and implications for governance abroad.

Anthea Mulakala, Senior Director for International Development Cooperation at Asia Foundation, will then discuss recent research projects on BRI projects in Asia and community engagement around those projects, as well as China’s Global Development Initiative.

This event will provide an opportunity to discuss China’s international development approaches, and what has changed in the wake of pandemic and current economic challenges.
